We developed an online shared decision making tool called AVITA and are now testing its feasibility and preliminary impact in a small pilot study.

What should I know about this research?

  • Your patient shared your name with us when they volunteered to participate in this study.
  • Taking part in this research is voluntary. There are no consequences if you choose not to participate.
  • The shared decision making tool, AVITA, creates a “snapshot” summary of your patient’s goals and preferences and shares it with the patient’s designated heart team clinician to facilitate shared decision making.
  •  Whether or not you received or reviewed the snapshot summary, we ask for your participation.
  • Participation involves completing a brief online survey, which should take about 2-5 minutes.
  • You are invited to ask all of your questions before you decide whether you want to participate. Contact information is listed below.
  • About 25 patients with severe aortic stenosis and who have an upcoming appointment (within 4 weeks) and their heart team clinicians will be invited to participate in this study.

Why is this research being done?

  • We are testing an online shared decision making tool called AVITA, designed to help people with severe aortic stenosis explore their treatment options.
  • We want to find out if AVITA facilitates shared decision making.

How long will I be in this research?

  • Your participation in this research will last for the 2-5 minutes it takes to complete this evaluation. If you have other patients participating in the study, you will be asked to consent and complete another brief evaluation.

What happens to me if I agree to take part in this research?

  • You will be asked a few questions (online) about yourself and the clinic visit with your patient who is in the study. This should take just a few minutes.

More about the Study:

Researchers: The Principal Investigators of the study are Nananda Col, MD, MPP, MPH, FACP and Megan Coylewright, MD, MPH (Erlinger Health).

Outcomes: This pilot study assesses the feasibility, usability of AVITA and its preliminary impact on shared decision making, patient knowledge, patient-provider communication, decisional conflict, patient involvement, the quality of the decision, quality of care provided, and the efficiency of the visit.

If you would like to refer patients to the study, please contact us at info@valvesurvey.com. We can mail you referral materials to make available to patients with severe or symptomatic aortic stenosis.
